From the Sea to the Plate: Or how a school study ends up at the Poros Fish Market with a LaLeRi

From the Sea to the Plate: Or how a school study ends up at the Poros Fish Market with a LaLeRi

The blue waters of the Saronic are changing, and our local community is taking action. Last week, the Poros Fish Market was transformed into a vibrant hub of flavor and environmental education.

Science Meets Practice and Collaboration

It all started at Poros Lyceum. Students, under the guidance of their teacher Mrs. Stergiou, conducted a significant study on invasive fish species. This project was carried out with the vital support of the Argosaronic Environmental Foundation (AEF).

In parallel, local organizations LALERI and Katheti actively create and support this and similar initiatives. This scientific quest inspired Laleri to organize this specific event, now dedicating a large part of its mission to informing and raising public awareness about these fish species. It would be particularly important for other local stakeholders to get involved in the future, helping us highlight such a critical part of our lives, which is inextricably linked to the sea.

A Community United

The success of the day was a testament to the incredible collaboration of local businesses and volunteers:

The Poros Fish Market: Generously provided the space and the fish.
Kostas Sofianos: Delivered an exceptional lesson on the art of filleting these specific species and donated the fish.
Theseus Bakery: Provided the fresh bread that accompanied our seafood dishes.
Stathis Tsibithis (from "Sokaki" Tavern): Our chef, who cooked with immense passion and embraced the entire effort.
Our Dedicated Volunteers: A huge thank you to Mr. Vangelis Papathimiopoulos and Ms. Stamatia Papathanasiou, as well as everyone else who worked tirelessly.

The Next Generation in Action

The most hopeful message came from the high school students. Under Mrs. Stergiou’s guidance, the children showed immense interest: they participated in the cooking, learned filleting techniques, and tasted new flavors with an open mind. Despite the large crowds, the public waited patiently, enjoying the vibrant energy of the younger generation.

The Market as a Beacon of Culture, Gastronomy, and Local Identity

The spark we saw in the children's eyes gave us significant food for thought. The Municipal Market is not just a building with fishmongers and butcher shops; it is the point where gastronomy meets daily life and culture. On an island, the market is the mirror of its society.

Why have we allowed the feeling of the traditional market to fade? Our market has the potential to be a Vibrant Cultural Hub, a place that represents absolute cleanliness and an aesthetic that invites you to explore. Imagine a place that welcomes you with "100 scents": the iodine of the sea, the smell of fresh meat, local herbs, and produce. This event proved it is time to reclaim this space as an ambassador for our island.

Why It Matters

By turning "invaders" into a culinary choice, we protect native fish and help restore balance to the marine environment. When education, science, and the local market work together, challenges become opportunities for our community.

A huge thank you to: Stathis Tsibithis for the unique flavors, Kostas Sofianos for the art of filleting and the fish, Theseus Bakery for the bread, and our volunteers Mr. Papathimiopoulos and Stamatia.

Our students have shown us the way: learning, action, and respect for the sea.
